Rough Cut | Part 1

This is the proof-of-concept.
Two Scopes
Because I’m applying to two different VAF funding tiers, I’m presenting two clear scopes for the same documentary: an expanded version (if awarded a larger grant) and
a lean microgrant version (a tightly focused finish using mostly existing footage).

1 / Cultural Communities Grant Version
A long-form documentary (60–90 minutes) grounded in Vallejo footage from Skyview Memorial Chapel and expanded with additional interviews, expanded family archives, and crafted post-production to tell a layered story about immigrant family life, caregiving, faith, humor, and remembrance.
Key UHD footage already exists and establishes the core narrative spine. A rough cut foundation is underway, and a short proof-of-concept excerpt demonstrates tone, pacing, and the intended final approach.
Finished long-form film (UHD master) with captions; screening-ready and web-ready exports; a basic press kit; and supplemental materials supporting the public presentation (discussion prompts and a simple Q&A framing guide). Optional add-ons if funding supports it: behind-the-scenes material and a short educational resource packet.
Year 1 completion and screening after funding: interviews and Vallejo location footage, edit integration, UHD finishing, captions, and delivery, followed by a public Vallejo screening and guided discussion.
vs.
2 / Program - Restricted Microgrant Version
A tightly scoped documentary (45–60 minutes) built primarily from existing Vallejo footage at Skyview Memorial Chapel, supported by a focused set of archival images and narration, designed to deliver a finished, screenable piece with additional production.
Professionally filmed UHD footage exists. A rough cut foundation exists, and a 4–5 minute proof-of-concept excerpt demonstrates the intended final approach.
Finished documentary with UHD master; captions (minimum English); screening-ready export; web-ready export; and simple press materials (short synopsis + stills).
2–3 months from funding (tight post workflow: rough cut → finishing → captions → exports).
Rooted in Vallejo
My mother’s memorial was held at
Skyview Memorial Chapel (at Skyview Memorial Lawn). The footage from that service is what birthed the idea for this documentary.

For many Vallejo residents, Skyview is where the community gathers for final goodbyes. In my own family, it has been a recurring place of remembrance across generations, which is part of why filming there matters. It is not just a backdrop; it is a shared Vallejo landmark where people honor loved ones together.
